Technical data sheet (Babesia gibsonii)
Technical details for
ready to use PCR kit for Babesia gibsoni (gel agarose based) ; 100 Reactions
Babesia canis and Babesia gibsoni have been infected the dogs and causing the
canine babesiosis showing the following symptoms: fever, anorexia, malaise,
hemoglobinuria and hemolytica anemia. Babesia canis is reported to cause the
disease in Europe, Africa, Asia and America, but the Babesia gibsoni is found
in Africa and Asia. Detection of Babesia can be done through microscopic as
well as serological methods along with the cell culture methods, but these
methods have the problems of lower sensitivity (in case of microscopic
diagnosis), cross reactions ( with serological tests) and long duration (with
cell culture) needed. Therefore the PCR is merging as gold standard in the
field of molecular medicine as it is highly sensitive, more specific and the
results can be obtained on the same day or lastest next day. Moreover it needs
only small amount of probes.
target gene: highly conserved region of RNA gene sequence of Babesia gibsoni
Kind of samples: blood samples (blood samples can be shipped throughout the
world as one can put 2-3 drops of blood on filter paper as dried blood is
sufficient to run the test and send in a letter to any laboratory in the world:
It is advisable to put this in extra plastic bag), Tissue and other body
fluids. This can be used to screen the canine serum as well as cell lines to
be used in cell culture preparation, tick (one can isolate the DNA from the
tick and run with our PCR to see whether the ticks are infected.)This needs
isolated DNA, which can be isolated with commercial available kit or home made
method.
Validation: It has been checked for the cross reactions with related and non
related micro organisms like Anaplasma, Neospora caninum, Babesia bigemina,
Toxoplasma gondii, DNA of healthy dog, Borrelia burgdorferi, Leptospira,
Brucella abortus and many more . The serial dilution has been done to see the
detection limit. The specificity of the test is 96-98%.
Detection limit: 0.0001% Parasitemia
